Do it yourself
I found this article about " Do it yourself stations" in colleges. In some college dining halls they have different stations; grill, pasta, or maybe even a nacho station. This gives the student more choices of what they want and can customize their meal to exactly how they want it. Throughout the dining halls there are diffenrnt stations, not just your basic grill station, such as a stir fry station. Having so many options students have a wider view of the culinary world. This could even help obesity in schools. For example if you have a "do it yourself" salad station, the idea of being able to customize the way you want it and have an almost a hands on experience of it will get more students to eat salad. It can work for any cuisine, as long as they have healthy menu items.

This article is about how some quick service restaurants are bringing in stations to were they can see what is being put onto or into what they are eating. Some of the restaurants implicating these operations will give the restaurants more ways to improve their customer service.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this is a great idea and that more places should bring this in. This idea will improve customer contact and the people who need to know what needs to be improved right away instead of throught a line of people.
College campus' across the country are known for their unhealthy and fatty food choices. Along with unhealthy choices, many of these dining halls offer limited cycle menus which can sometimes be uninspiring to students. The combination of these factors usually lead to weight gain better known as the "freshman 15".
ReplyDeleteAlthough many dining halls are trying the revamp their menu optinion, many are still not addressing the health issues. College campus dining halls have tried to add variety to the students dining experience by adding interactive stations. This article talks about the addition of interaction to the college dining hall. Although these station add variety they don't give students a healthier choose. Sadly those looking to eat healthier are still subject the salad bar. But on the other hand the interactive stations do give the student the power to choose what they put on their burgers or sandwich and make a better choice for themselve.
It has been proven that eating healthier gives you more energy. I beleive if college campus across the country began to incorperate more healthier options on their menus, students will be more enegratic in classes. I think that the interactive station can be a positive trend in college campus. I think giving students options give them the power to make better choose for themselves. I also beleive that we will be seeing alot of changes to college campus dining across the country in the next few years.
In working at a dinning hall on campus, students like personalization. As expressed in this article Ohio University uses many of these custom stations to appeal to their student body. These stations include: pizza, burgers, thia, chinese, and pasta. They layout the ingredients and in some cases they select their choices and hand them to the cook to prepare. Others include a bar that the students can see and verbally choose what they want.
ReplyDeleteIn working at a dinning hall I feel that this sounds like a great idea but in some cases is not practical. In having more ingredient choices requires constant supply and inventory that certain places cant stock due to no money coming in. Also, portion control is key because students always tend to have bigger eyes than stomachs and once someone touched an item they cant replace it back on the bar. Protiens are the largest expense of the food cost section and if you keep raw items out for people to touch them than they waste more product and money.
This station idea although it looks good in the minds of students is not for a dinning hall that receives nearly nothing as far as money.
