Within all of the upheaval of new trends for this year colleges and the students within are desiring new and different foods for the cafeteria. This list of trends, in this article, may be surprising to many people across the country, but the company Sodexo believes they are up to challange. Some of the dishes include apricot glazed turkey, meatloaf with frizzle fried onions, and vegetarian lentil shepards pie, not only are these dishes some that you might find in a restaurant, they also feature a variety of vegetarian dishes.
This article has brought to my attention the changing diet of the average college student, they do not just want the normal staple of every day college life, ramen noodles and pizza, but want more of a variety of dishes that have to be eaten while sitting.

Working in a dining hall this article really speaks to me. And to be honest what really gets students going is meals that remind them home cooking. Turkey, pasta, and just the simple dishes that really speak to the the students. They want food that reminds them from home. Being away from school and not having your moms ravioli or your grandmothers roast beef makes me so home sick. It may not taste the same but knowing it as a home cooked feel to it appeals to students.
ReplyDeleteIn reading this article about popular foods that college students prefer I feel that they are right. In working in a dinning hall there are two categories that students like: Spicy and Comfort foods. Everyone of my friends are always adding heat to their foods by means of tabasco, franks red hot, and different types of peppers. They also enjoy comfort because in being away from home they need something that reminds them of home cooked meals like mom or dad used to make.
ReplyDeleteAnother observation that i have noticed is that students want class or a touch of fine dinning. They demand this because they feel that since they are paying so much to attend a college or university they better get nice and tasty food. Sometimes this doesnt happen due to numbers of meal plans or due to budget constrictions that are imposed on each site.
As a freshman, I remember going to the dining hall an being disappointed in the vareity of foods avaible. I find the results of this study to be very interesting. It amazes me to see the diverse vareity and sophistication in the options students mentioned by the students.
ReplyDeleteOver the next few years, I believe that the struture of the college dining hall is going to change dramatically. In a previous article we talked about the addition of interactive stations and healthier chooses. Along with these changes I also think that we will be seeing an increase in the vareities of food served. I believe the more students demand from their food the better the quality of foods the dining hall will serve.
As a culinary student, I have always been interested in experiencing different cultures and foods. I believe that by introducing students to these new cuisines it will open up their minds into accepting other cultures. I believe there are many benefits to introducing more diverse to students and clearly there is a student interest in these changes.
