food and beverage trends

I found this interesting article about beverages trends. The article in titled "Beverage trends all about health and variety," starts off with disscussing that we as consumers are looking past the soda, ice tea and coffee drinks options. We are becoming bored of the same old choices and are looking to add that spice back to the beverage section. Coca-cola is looking to include minute maid products into some of their new products. The new trend? Smoothies, Lemonades, and energy drinks.

Smoothies are now becoming a popular item because of their convience to consumers. The amount of shops that are springing up are increasing every year and its really bringing in revenue. Smoothies have always been health options that is why they have been put to the back burner several years ago but in this health crazy demand they are making their return. They can also serve as replacements to meals.

Lemonades and Teas are popular because of their versitility. They can be fuzed with almost anything and will meet the flavor needs of the costumer. People are becoming familiar with different types of teas because of their antioxidants powers.

Energy drinks are a huge market in todays age. People are sleeping less and working more to support for their families. They choose to replace and hour or two of sleep for one or two energy drinks to keep them going.

  1. When I think of trends in the foodservice industry, I am guilty of focusing on the food aspects. Often times, like many I tend to overlook what is going on in the beverage world. Today, consumers are said to be looking for much more from their beverages than ever before. Recently, many establishments have shown interest in developing signature beverages to appeal to the consumer demands.

I found this article very interesting because it is something that many people over look. When I go to a restaurant I think about the basics soda water, beer, and wine. When I think of beverage trends such as signature drinks I automatically think alcoholic beverages.I was suprised to not see alcoholic beverages mentioned on this list at all. Instead the article focused more on smoothies, iced teas, lemonades, and engery drink to give drink menus a boost.

I believe the information in this article can be benefical to many different market segments within the food service industry. Knowing your consumer is extremely important in becoming successful. Adding something like a signature lemonade or smoothie to your menu can definatily separate your restaurant from the next. One restaurant which I can think of which us signature drinks is the Cheese Cake Factory. The Cheese Cake Factory offers a line of speciality lemonades and iced teas for their guest to choice from, one of which is the raspberry lemonade which I order everytime! I think that if advertised right by the restaurant and its staff the introduction of signature non-alcoholic drinks could be a successful trend within the industry.

  2. I have to agree with Jess, I also never really notice the beverage portion of the menu. I am always interested in different types of micro-brews but looked over smoothies and mixed drinks.I feel that alcoholic beverages would be more appealing to the customer of legal age then minors. But lemonade, tea, and smoothies do show up in coffee shops nowadays.Starbucks has there own line iced teas and lemonades and so does Dunkin' Donuts. I Feel like is is more of a chain restaurant trend rather then your average mom and pop establishment.

  3. Many quick service restaurants and other companies are trying to jump on the energy drink train because they are so popular. I have noticed that in the recent development of the drink industry that many more bars and restaurants are trying to bring in these energy supplements to make their menu more up to date.
